Recommendations:

Jing is a simple (free) and easy to use tool for teachers who are just starting to feel comfortable using new technology. It is perfect for any content area, K – 12. Teachers can use Jing like a camera and video recorder to create simple tutorials, a demonstration / collaboration / communication tool, copy to a blog, publish student work and reach students remotely. When planning your projects I would recommend writing a script to keep you on track. Files need to be converted for uploading to Youtube, which is a simple (and free) additional step. It is an ideal tool to add to your teaching arsenal.

As you become more comfortable using new media, I would recommend Screencast-O-Matic for it’s flexibility and greater editing options. Like Jing, it is a great (free) tool for any content area K-12.  The program also offers a Pro version with more control and unlimited recording. The fact that Screencast-O-Matic gives you multiple file format options that can easily upload and download, it is a clear choice for the tech savvy educator who demands control and versatility.

Jing  is a free, multi-platform program that helps users capture screenshots as still images and video. It is perfect for the creation of short videos, with a time limit of five minutes. After you upload the program it is easy to navigate with a simple movable widget that looks like a sunburst. Jing has the capability of being customized. You can create Hotkeys, shortcut codes to improve your workflow. Files can be output and uploaded after they are converted using Quicktime or another free service. Screencast.com, another free service offered by the parent company of Jing, can be used as a place to share files, create links, and has the ability to add privacy levels to folders. Jing also has a wonderful series of tutorials to help users get the most from the program.

Screencast-O-Matic  is a multi-platform program that allows users to create screenshots and video.  It offers a free and pro version of their service and is very attractive to tech savvy individuals.  The program has a simple icon that can be saved to your toolbar. The free version of Screencast-O-Matic allows users to create a video up to fifteen minutes, the pro version video time is unlimited, this makes it perfect for creating longer videos. Screencast-O-Matic can be used without installing to your computer.  The video feature allows users to video with a simultaneous webcam feature. You must allow Java when using this program. Users can easily download and output files directly to the internet by choosing from multiple formats offered, there is no need to convert files. There are many editing options in the free version and the pro version includes additional editing and script tool features, the ability to draw & zoom while recording and password protection. Like Jing, Screencast-O-Matic also has a wide array of tutorials to help users get the most from their program.
